САЩ (Тексас); Мексико (Nuevo León, Tamaulipas)
Местообитание: Расте по равнини и ниски хълмове, с песъчливи, глинести, тинести или покрити с чакъл почви, до 500 м. надморска височина.

Единичен кактус, много рядко образува издънки. Видът има грудкоподобен главен корен, но не е геофит, тъй като най-горната меристема е над земята.
Стебло: Цилиндрично до бухалковидно, или сферично, до 15 см височина, 5-7 см в диаметър.
Радиални бодли: 13-28 на ареол, прозрачно жълтеникави, с червено-кафяви връхчета, най-дългите бодли достигат от 6 до 10 мм дължина.
Централни бодли: 3-4, Един от тях е от светлокафяв до бял, завършващ с кука, 4-5 см дълъг. Останалите централни бодли (2-3) са кафяви до тъмно-червеникаво-кафяви на цвят.
Корени: Дълги, месести, грудкоподобни главни корени със заоблени подутини, понякога имат вторични корени, подобни на луковица, често са хоризонтално ориентирани.
Цветове: Жълто-зелени с кафява средна ивица, 2.5-3 см в диаметър. Цъфтят през февруари-март.
Отглеждане
Нужен е средно голям и дълбок съд, който да побере обширните корени. Нуждае се от директно слънце, понася и засенчване в горещите части на деня, ако светлината е недостатъчна, ще доведе до издължаване, слабо развитие на бодлите. През зимата се държи напълно сух в светли помещения при температури 5-12°C. Толерантен застудяване и издържа краткотрайно до -12°C.
Размножаване: От семена.
