Стебло: единично, сферично до цилиндрично, до 35 см диаметър и 40 (-100) см височина, светло-зелено
Ребра: 13-16 плавни ребра с рядко разположени сивкави мъхести ареоли
Радиални бодли: 5-8, 2-3 см дълги, яки, червени (с времето посивяват), два са леко приплеснати
Централни бодли: 1, 6-8 см дълъг, як, широк, накрая закривен като кука, червен
Цветове: 2-4 см широки и до 5 см дълги, карминено-червени с по-тъмна ивица по края
Отглеждане:
Доста бавни спрямо стандартите на рода кактуси. Младите растения се отглеждат в по-богат на хумус субстрат, при по-големите той трябва да е по-слаб. В него да не присъства варовик. Саксията трябва да е с такъв размер, че кореновата система на кактуса да може да обхване целия обем от почва. Цъфтят при достигане на диаметър 14-15 см. Поливат се по-рядко, но обилно. Нуждаят се от най-силното слънце и свеж въздух, който може да се осигури. През зимата се държат напълно сухи при температури 8 - 12 °C. Издържат на краткотрайни застудявания до - 8° C. Рядко срещани в колекциите.
Размножаване: От семена
Болести: Страдат от фузариум. Възрастните екземпляри често хвърлят корените си, обикновенно зимата
